It was a huge weekend for the Metal Mulisha during Glen Helen’s Lucas Oil Offroad Racing Series 9 & 10 with thousands of fans who came out to this back-to-back sold out event! During Saturday’s race Hailie Deegan kicked things off in her Junior 2 Kart. Hailie held it together, powering through the whoop section and made a few passes towards the front.
She did her best out there and finished off taking 8th with a best lap time of 52.696. Next in the line up was Todd Leduc racing in the PRO4 class. Todd had the fans on their feet as he started in second row, got pushed back into the mix and battled all the way to the front picking off all the drivers and finishing in 2nd!
It was time for Brian Deegan and Justin Bean Smith to kick things into gear during the PROLITE class. In the first lap Deegan ran second, with Bean in third holding off the other drivers from making any pass.
Bean started to slow down on the second lap, and pulled into the pits with a mechanical issue while Deegan started to close in on Morris for the front position. On the restart, Brian had an opportunity to take the lead, getting inside of Bradley Morris and forcing him wide at the exit turn two. However, at turn three Brian and Morris bumped, and Brian dropped into second. At the restart lap after a Competition Yellow, Brian was in third before a rollover by Todd Cunningham in turn two brought out another full course caution. Racing resumed briefly, but a rollover in turn two by Shannon Campbell prompted a green-white-checkers finish, and Brian, who had actually lost his brakes, ended up holding on strong to nab the 3rd spot.
Ryan Hagy was on the hunt during the SUPERLITE class. He managed to avoid all the carnage and push his truck into the middle of the fight looking for a pass into the lead. Hagy was running strong looking to make a move but mid-race into turn one, he suffered a huge rollover that took Hagy and his truck out of the race that night. He was alright and walked it off after the officials got him out of the truck.
The last race was the PRO2 Unlimited class. Brian started fourth and was running with the leaders when a full course caution on lap five allowed Brian to edge by, until he was forced wide and off the track by McGrath. Brian had to re-joined the track in last, and eventually moved up as high as fourth, when McGrath experienced an issue and slowed. After experiencing a flat tire Brian pulled into the hot pits under yellow, and had to surrender his fourth place. He ultimately finished in seventh position, salvaging valuable points.
Sunday was another big day of racing for the Metal Mulisha team. Hailie once again kicked things off in her Junior 2 Kart mixing up positions and trying to move up to the front. Hailie did a great job and finished up her race weekend with a 7th place position.
Todd Leduc went to war in his PRO4 truck and was chasing down his brother Kyle for a pass. Right after the full course caution smoke was seen coming from the back of Todd LeDuc’s truck, but this didn’t hold him back from finishing the race in 3rd place! Congrats Todd.
Deegan and Bean went out in round 10 ready for the podium. Brian started in the third row next to Bean and they both moved into lead positions during the first three laps. Bean rolled over in turn two bringing the course to a yellow flag and then flames burst from his truck taking that yellow flag to a red. When the track turned green Deegan came up to catch the leader, where they battled it out for the front spot. Toward the end of the race Brian suffered a flat front tire, yet managed to hang on and finish the race in 2nd with a flat.
During the SUPERLITE class Hagy was ready to make the podium! During the first three laps he mixed up front of the pack taking the inside lines and began to close the gap on the current leader. Hagy then muscled by Rahders in turn three, before getting past Fouch right afterwards. Rahders fought back, though, as he jumped alongside Fouch, again, and out-braked him into turn five, moving back up to third in the process. On the final lap, Rahders spun out as he exited turn four, sending him to the back of the pack with Hagy crossing the checkered flag taking 2nd!
Pro 2, the final race, Brian started in the front row was able to get out and up to the lead early. Brian held on the entire race and held off McGrath, who was close, but never able to form a challenge to pass Brian. Deegan finished PRO2 in 1st and was awarded the two fastest Lap awards, in both Saturday’s Pro Lite on and Sunday’s Pro 2.
“It’s weekends like these that I really appreciate my crew. They had my back every step of the way, from no brakes to flat tires, nothing can stop us. We were able to close down the points lead in Pro 2, and narrow the points gap to stay ahead in the championship battle,” – Brian Deegan.
