BMW's C evolution Unveiled: Inside Bavaria's New Electric Scooter

BMW electric eScooter

Greetings from London, where I'm gearing up to test BMW's just-unveiled eScooter, the C evolution.

You'll get riding impressions as soon as I can swing a leg over the electric 'scoot, but in the meantime here are some key facts about the C evolution:

So near and yet so far at Suzuka

BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent's Sébastien Gimbert, Damian Cudlin and Erwan Nigon looked all set to claim an historic podium finish in today's Suzuka 8 Hours race, until an electrical problem saw them drop from second to tenth in the last 40 minutes of the race. Starting from 11th on the grid, the #99 BMW S1000RR made steady progress during the first six hours, benefitting from consistency of pace and a number of retirements from the front of the race to eventually move up into third place. The team were promoted one more place when Vincent Philippe on the championship leading SERT bike crashed out of second place as the race entered the final hour. With just 50 minutes to go BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent looked certain to secure a first podium finish at Suzuka for a European manufacturer, and take the lead in the championship standings as a result.Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. Just a few minutes after taking second place the #99 BMW S1000RR had to pit in with an electrical issue which the team didn't have time to remedy in the time remaining. Instead, Gimbert was despatched to do the best job he could in the final 40 minutes, on a bike that was now 20 seconds off the pace of the leaders. The reigning French Superbike Champion fought as hard as possible, and was often well over the limit, but was unable to hold off challenges from behind and eventually had to settle for ninth place at the chequered flag. The riders and the team were obviously disappointed to miss out on a podium finish, but will take consolation from the fact that they have closed the gap to the leaders in the championship standings.BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent will return to action at round four of the Endurance World Championship, the 8 Hours of Oschersleben in Germany, which takes place from 9 - 12 August.Erwan Nigon: "Today I have experienced the biggest disappointment of my career so far. To finish second at Suzuka behind a full factory bike, ridden by the likes of Rea, Akiyoshi and Okada, would be like a victory for us, but it wasn't to be. In racing you win some, like we did at Qatar, and you lose some, like we did here today, but knowing that doesn't make it any easier to accept. The team did a great job and we rode a near perfect race for seven and a half hours, only to lose out to a minor electrical problem within sight of the chequered flag. Unbelievable. Sébastien did a brave ride at the end, to salvage ninth position and the all-important championship points."Damian Cudlin: "A podium finish at Suzuka is something that you dream about as a rider, something that you'll be boring your kids with for years, so I'm devastated to have got close enough to taste it only to miss out in the last 40 minutes. We rode a textbook race, made no mistakes and we were in sight of the podium when I came in to hand over to Seb for the final run. We knew there was something wrong as soon as he started the bike and, sure enough, he was straight back in after one lap. There wasn't time to start pulling the bike apart, so he went back out on a bike around 100km/h down on top speed compared to the competition. It must have been scary for him out there, but he held it together and brought it home in the top ten, when I was convinced we weren't even going to finish."Michael Bartholemy: Team Principal "Once again we are reminded that racing has its highs, but it also has its lows. We came so close to a remarkable result today, but it just wasn't to be. All three riders and everyone in the team did an outstanding job this weekend and, but for some bad luck right at the end of the race, we'd have been celebrating an historic podium here. So, I want to say thank you to every single one of the team, to BMW and to Michelin, for all their hard work and commitment this weekend. We have moved up to fourth in the championship standings and closed the gap on the leaders. Next time out at Oschersleben, I hope we can close the gap further with a win for BMW at home."

Lightning strikes at the Californian round of the e-Power/TTX race

Immediately from the start of the 9 lap race, Michael Barnes took the lead closely followed by Team Icon Brammo riders Steve Atlas and Eric Bostrom with Matthias Himmelmann leading Tom Montano at the end of the first lap and set the scene of the remainder of the race. Racing for the first time on this mythical circuit, Katja Poensgen achieved a remarkable result and finished in sixth position. She keeps the lead of the FIM e-Power International Championship with 55 points ahead of her team mate Matthias Himmelmann (38) and Chris Amendt (36) who did not participate.Robert Hancock, Ely Schless and the three Zero riders, Kenyon Kluge, Ted Rich and Jeremiah Johnson followed on their machines fitted with less powerful batteries. Nevertheless they raced each other closely and with exception of Ely, they managed to cross the finish line with very constant lap times, further proof that their batteries still had plenty of energy left over at the end of this 32km long race.During the press conference the riders said:1 - Michael Barnes, USA (Barracuda/Lightning) – 14'32.060Compared to last year the race speeds closer to the practice times?"We were not about to lose this one, we have worked hard on the Barracuda Lightning l bike to hold enough energy for the whole race, I can't thank my guys enough for all the development work they have done on the bike. My team have worked very hard to give me a great bike this year and the support we have gotten from Barracuda Networks has really helped. From 2 years ago we have improved 12 seconds 4 second quicker than last year.  That speaks for its self. Richard Hatfield has put in his heart and soul and I can't thank him enough hopefully it will pay off for all of us soon." I was looking at the top speeds during the race and 144 MPH hour...140 mph was hit in qualifying which is faster than any 600's out here. The bike does feel more like a 1000 as far as the torque is concerned....the sky's the limit with electric power, we will eclipse something soon. I don't when or how but we are going to make our mark with the electric industry that's for sure. What's the next step racing wise?"A bit more parity with more motorcycles so we can have a better show. This wasn't as much of a runaway as is has been in the past. I also manage my power a bit better; it's a real temptation; but to just be on the throttle and go as fast as you can all the time is not a winning strategy. We are hoping with advances in battery technology, we will achieve the next step, lighter packs that hold more energy so before long we will be in the super bike distance races..."2. Steve Atlas, USA (Team Icon Brammo) – 14'34.963Compared to qualifying times you were putting some really fast times in the actual race?"Yeah, I only got to one lap in qualifying due to 15 cent resistor part in the bike not working. And I only did 3 laps in the first practice so the race was all new for me as I didn't get much track time before hand. for first few laps, I stuck behind Eric as though he is on the same bike I am on so I should be able to do what he can do but unfortunately he had some trouble and I just feel in the groove and I was surprised by how quick we were going but my team Icon Brammo did a great job and worked really hard to prep two bikes for this weekend with the bike a huge improvement over last year. Probably 7 or 8 seconds faster than last year. It was fun out there trying to keep Barney in sight. It was cool to not have a huge runaway as there was in the past and it is really cool to have a new team mate in Eric and I am excited for the rest of the year. Once the battery technology catches up we will give the gas bikes a run for their money.3 - Eric Bostrom, USA (Team Icon Brammo) – 14'44.858You've ridden any bikes, in many different classes, and here you are in an e-Power race. It is an interesting concept. What do you have to say about it? "I only rode the bike a week ago and I said to the team if I don't like it I am out. But just pulling out of the pits and coming out of the race track, it put a big smile on my face and surpassed all my expectations; I am still coming up to speed on how to ride the bike and it may have caught me out a little bit. With Barney setting a blistering pace it was cool to see the other Brammo up there and my team mate Steve pushing me to go faster. The biggest disappointment for me was not being able to keep Barney honest and push him to the end.The feel is the similar to a normal motorcycle. We have teething problems with a new motorcycle that's all it is. I am sure if asked somebody like Kenny Roberts then he would say the same thing about a gas bike that is at this stage of development."Do you miss the noise? It must be very strange for you to ride without the noise? It is strange, but you feel like more than ever that you are in your own little world, the sensation of not having engine rpm to gage what you should be doing so there is a feeling of 'oh man they have taken away some of sensations' but on the flip slide you have more sensation and more feedback from the asphalt so you are getting better feedback to Ican actually hear and feel the rotors on the bike.Next round of the FIM e-Power International Championship in Oscherleben (GER) on 11 August joint with TTXGP Championship.Photos FIM/Good Shoot- Jacky Ley

Report: NHTSA investigating 2013 Infiniti JX over e-brake concern

2013 Infiniti JX35 - front three-quarter view - static

An investigation has been opened by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration into the 2013 Infiniti JX over possible issues with the emergency brake.

Specifically, the probe is looking at improper application of the e-brake, according to a Reuters report. While the investigation of 8,000 new Infiniti crossovers is not a recall, it could eventually trigger one if the government agency doesn't like what it finds.

The probe was launched after a pair of owners reported to NHTSA that "the intelligent brake assist system inappropriately activated emergency braking autonomously bringing the vehicle to an immediate and complete stop." One can see the potential danger in a vehicle that stops unintentionally and without warning.

No word yet on what might have caused the issue, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

Spy Shots: Face of next BMW M3 caught while testing

BMW M3 spy shots - hot weather testing

Behold our first clear glimpse at the 2014 BMW M3. Photographers spotted the high performance sedan undergoing hot-weather testing in Death Valley. Engineers peeled back a slab of heavy nose cladding for the first time, revealing the machine's menacing lower valance and headlamps. The design features sizable air intakes down low, and it looks as if a new hood is part of the recipe as well. If these photos are any indication, the M3 will continue to boast a prominent power bulge for the next model year.

Massive drilled rotors and similarly potent-looking calipers are part of the song and dance, which is a good thing. BMW has made it clear the 2014 M3 will bow with a forced induction inline six in place of the current model's fire-breathing high-rev V8. Even so, we don't expect to see a reduction in power or performance.

2 New Videos: Kenny Roczen, Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg

Here are two new videos, courtesy of Alli Sports.

Let's start with Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg.

This video by Alli of Jeremy is described like this: Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg comes from the original days of FMX. Freestyle motocross didn't exist when he was offered his first paycheck to jump, a surreal beginning to a never-ending epic. Twitch has done it all from X Games Gold to staring in his own film, 'Twitch's 420% All Natural.' Recently, Twitch teamed up with Famous Stars and Straps to create his own JS signature line of clothing. Still taking the FMX world by storm, Twitch is expanding his scope into the world of SuperLite off-road truck racing where he has already been making a solid name for himself. Take a few minutes and get to know one of the best in the business in this Alli Show featuring Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg.

And now, onto World MX 2 Motocross Champion Kenny Roczen. This video by Alli highlites Kenny at the recent Lucas Oil Budds Creek AMA Pro Motocross race. Ken Roczen, #70, gives you some insight to how his day went at Budds Creek. With great starts in each moto, Roczen started things off with speed. Taking a second place finish in the first moto and then another second place in the second moto, Roczen finished with a respectable second place overall finish for the day. Hear from the rider himself as Roczen invites you to hang out with him at Budds Creek in this Day With.

Bou signs off in style

With the 2012 FIM Trial World Championship already won, some could of thought that Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa might not be that concerned about winning at the final round of the series held in Great Britain. Those people were proved very wrong, as Toni signed off in some style by adding two more victories to his list as he dominated both days of the event held at Nord Vue near Penrith over the weekend. Bou can now go into his summer break knowing that his work is done, well for the time being at least as he explains: "This has been a fantastic weekend, and a great way to bring the championship to an end with another double victory. Yesterday was strange, as I had no pressure, with me having won the title already. Although I won, I was not riding at my best. Today was different, the sections were slightly easier even with the bad weather, and my riding was much better. Now I can enjoy my holiday. I will go to Mexico for 10 days and then when I return I will begin my training again so I can be ready for the other competitions we have before the end of the seaso

Report: Big Chevy closeout deals have 2013 Malibu Eco sitting on lots in favor of 2012 models

2013 Chevy Malibu Eco

First, the good news: The Chevrolet Malibu is selling at a great pace.

Now, the bad news: It's the wrong Malibu.

Dealer lots are filling up with 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco models as customers turn to the remaining 2012 models still there. After incentives are added up, the older Malibu costs about $6,000 less, Automotive News reported.

Through June, General Motors has sold about 7,000 mild-hybrid 2013 Ecos, which get 25 miles per gallon in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, since it launched in March. During the same time frame, Chevrolet has sold 100,000 2012 Malibus, which get 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

Price trumps mileage, is anyone surprised?

Hyundai recalls over 220,000 Sonata and Santa Fe models over airbag concern

2013 Hyundai Sonata - dynamic front three-quarter view

Hyundai is recalling certain Sonata and Santa Fe models due to issues with the vehicles' airbags.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain 2012-2013 Sonata models may have been built with side-curtain airbags that may deploy inadvertently, potentially injuring occupants and greatly reducing driver visibility. Hyundai will replace those airbags free of charge.

Meanwhile, the airbag system in certain 2007-2009 Santa Fe crossovers may not detect smaller adults in the front seats, which means they could fail to deploy in a collision. Hyundai will update the software that controls the airbag system free of charge.

All told, the recalls cover 199,118 Santa Fe models and 22,512 Sonata units. While the Sonata campaign is expected to begin next month, Hyundai hasn't supplied NHTSA with a campaign schedule as of yet. You can view both recall notices below.

I have to say, the most I took away from this – as bizarre as it was, and confusing for some time until a while after the race when it finally came out what actually caused this – was a reminder of the importance of Charlie Whiting’s job.

He’s always there, but I don’t think most watching tend to give him much thought. It’s his job as much as many others to make sure the drivers have a safe and proper start, and he’s obviously got a good eye up there.

(After all, the guy at the back did wave the green flag to give him the go ahead! Despite that, he still spotted that something was amiss and the start needed to be aborted.)

On this day in F1

Niki Lauda won the 1977 German Grand Prix – one year on from his dreadful crash at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The race was now held at the Hockenheimring. Pole sitter Jody Scheckter finished second ahead of Hans-Joachim Stuck.

The race was also memorable for the antics of Hans Heyer, who started despite not having qualified. Read more about that here:

Here’s footage from the race weekend:

Fiasco Follows Nobby Clark's Retracted AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Nomination

National Park Riding

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark... or more specifically, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and it all started with a strangely public case of Indian giving.

On June 11, the AMA said they were "pleased to announce" that Derek "Nobby" Clark, who was responsible for bikes which claimed 17 FIM world titles from the 1960s to 1980s, would be inducted into the upcoming Hall of Fame. Clark was quoted as saying "It's a great honor to be inducted. With many of the guys I worked for already in the Hall of Fame, all I can say is I know I'm in good company."

But on June 30, things got a little weird.

A follow-up statement said that the planned induction would be withdrawn due to an error in the balloting process. "This was a difficult decision," claimed American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation chairman Jeffrey V. Heininger, "but it had to be made to ensure the integrity of this remarkable institution."

Since then, the plot-- not surprisingly-- has thickened:

300 podiums for the Repsol Honda Team

Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner reached a new milestone for Repsol Honda Team at the US Grand Prix this past weekend. After eighteen years of successes, including over 100 victories and 9 world titles, the team achieved the 300 podium landmark through Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa's efforts in the tenth round of this year's MotoGP World Championship season. The energy company and the Japanese factory joined forces in 1995, with the intention of reaching the peak of the premier class. This latest milestone signifies further success for the Repsol Honda Team. In 18 years, the Repsol Honda partnership has won nine world titles: Four with Mick Doohan, two via Valentino Rossi, one courtesy of Álex Crivillé, one with Nicky Hayden and another with Casey Stoner. There have been more than 100 victories along the way and an historic 300 appearances on the podium for the team. The best riders have ridden with the instantly recognisable Repsol Honda livery over the past two decades and it is Dani Pedrosa who has obtained the most podiums for the team. The current Repsol rider has been on the rostrum on 65 occasions —16 wins, 26 second places and 23 thirds— and has the intention of further improving this figure as he challenges for the title in 2012.In less than two full seasons, Casey Stoner has to his name 23 podiums for Repsol Honda, courtesy of 14 victories, 2 second places and 7 third places. Together the pairing are the strongest duo in the premier class —just as Doohan and Crivillé were, back in the day. The Repsol Honda RC213V is one of the most competitive bikes on the grid, following on from the legendary NSR 500 from the second half of the 1990s, the formidable RC211V from the early MotoGP era and last year's title-winning RC212V.With a total of 16 podiums from 10 races so far this year, the Repsol Honda Team lead the team standings once again —further proof that this is a golden age for the outfit. Expect the quality to continue over the next two seasons with Dani Pedrosa and Marc Márquez as riders for the team.

MotoGP: Lap Record Falls During Qualifying at Laguna Seca

For those that are not familiar with the weather patterns of Northern California’s coastal areas, Saturday at Laguna Seca was a good example of the foggy morning gloom we natives must endure in order to be showered with the Golden State’s eternal afternoon sunshine. With FP3 nearly delayed because of low cloud cover, qualifying for the US GP at Laguna Seca couldn’t have conditions more opposite than this morning. Click past the jump for full-of-sunshine ...

Alpinestars SMX Plus Gore-Tex Waterproof Boots

Alpinestars launched their re-designed SMX Plus boots last fall and they were an immediate hit. The 2011 SMX Plus had many of the same features as the top-of-the-line Supertech R, only boiled down into a more reasonably priced package. The new model was originally released in both standard and vented versions, but this wasn’t quite but this wasn’t quite enough for Alpinestars. In order to cover all of their bases, they added a third SMX Plus variant for wet weather - the SMX Plus Gore-Tex Waterproof boots.

This new version of the SMX Plus uses a waterproof and breathable membrane from the weatherproofing gurus at Gore-Tex to help keep your feet comfortable 365 days a year. The Gore-Tex membrane really is the only thing that differentiates the newest addition to the SMX Plus line from the other two versions, but this is not a negative at all seeing as how the re-designed SMX Plus was already a very comfortable and protective boot.

Protection comes in quite a few different forms on the SMX Plus Gore-Tex. Alpinestars added their new Multi Link Control system to the rear of each boot when they gave them the overhaul last year. This exoskeleton not only helps prevent excessive ankle joint movement in a fall, but also provides impact protection to both sides of the ankle and Achilles heel. Additionally, the system gives you one more highly abrasion resistant layer between your foot and the road. The Multi Link Control system is made up of three separate parts. These include the TPU heel cup, a lower pivot joint at the sides of the ankle, and an upper link that slides through a tunnel located in the center of the calf protector. The whole system pivots and flexes comfortably without interfering with any movements on, or off the bike. All of this sits on top of durable rubber sole that is designed to last. The sole’s grip pattern features rain siping that will help you keep your feet on the pegs even if you’re pushing it in wet weather.

Inside the boot you will find a microfiber liner that is both soft and breathable. Alpinestars also used a liberal amount of open cell foam in all the right places so that it quickly molds to the shape of your feet to provide protection and a perfect fit. To further insure a good, snug fit, they added a Kevlar speed lace behind the outer layer. The SMX Plus gives you solid and reassuring feeling while remaining surprisingly flexible.

These are not listed on our website yet, so be sure to get in touch with Brad if you're interested or have any questions. Brad can be reached by calling 866.931.6644 ext. 810, or by sending him a PM through this forum. The SMX Plus Gore-Tex Boots can be had in any color you want, as long as it’s black.

The Multi Link Control system uses three separate parts to support the ankle and prevent hyperextension. It does both of these things while remaining very flexible.

The soles of the SMX Plus Gore-Tex boots use rain sipes to quickly shed water and enhance your grip in wet weather.

A look inside the boots reveals the Kevlar speed lace system. This system gives a firm, comfortable grip that improves feel and increases the level of protection by ensuring that the safety mechanisms are properly aligned.

MSRP $449.95
The Gore-Tex name is synonymous with weather-proofing.

Radical Ducati Wildcat

Ducati Monster 1100 custom
Spain is a hotbed of custom motorcycle building at the moment, and Radical Ducati is at the forefront of the performance-oriented scene.

Wildcat is the latest creation from Pepo Rosell and Reyes Ramon. It’s built around a blueprinted Monster 1100 Evo engine with a carbon fiber airbox, so it’s not short on power. (The muffler, believe it or not, is from a BMW.)

Ducati Monster 1100 custom
The motor nestles in Radical Ducati’s lightweight RAD 02 frame, with a chrome-moly main frame and an aluminum subframe. The swingarm is from a Monster S2R, and the wheels are BST carbon fiber items. That gorgeous, sculptural tank is aluminum, and left bare.
