But contrary to the contrarians, there are loads of things we can do as motorcyclists to reduce our exposure. If you recall the Governor's Highway Safety Association's report which found that motorcycle fatalities plateaued between 2010 and 2011, that study also indicated there are five basic steps that can help you reduce the odds of getting offed on a bike.

Márquez to start Iveco TT Assen from pole

During an incident-packed qualifying at the Iveco TT Assen in the Moto2™ class, it was Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol's Marc Márquez who took pole position in front of Pol Espargaró and Andrea Iannone. Márquez, who had played second fiddle to Pons 40 HP Tuenti's Espargaró for all of the preceding practices, pulled a lap of 1.37'133 out of the bag to snatch pole, despite ending up in the gravel at the end of the session. Espargaró finished just over four-tenths behind his rival, yet managed to keep Speed Master's Iannone at bay a further three and a half tenths down. GP Team Switzerland's Randy Krummenacher nearly caused a front-row upset, yet had to settle for a very credible fourth instead. Compatriot Dominique Aegerter, on board his Technomag-CIP machine, lines up next to him in fifth, after finding some impressive form at the Dutch track. Completing the second row is Came IodaRacing Project's Simone Corsi with his FTR bike, as he looks to get onto the podium for the first time this season. Marc VDS Racing Team's Scott Redding had a disappointing qualifying for his standards, ending down in seventh, ahead of Tech 3 Racing's fellow countryman Bradley Smith on his Mistral 610. NGM Mobile Forward Racing's Alex de Angelis made it two FTR bikes in the top ten with a solid display, ahead of Interwetten-Paddock's Tom Lüthi, who will no doubt look to improve in tomorrow's race. There was drama early on as QMMF Racing Team teammates Elena Rosell and Anthony West crashed, as the female Spanish rider tried to avoid West as he slid off track. Blusens Avintia's Julián Simón following suit shortly after, and with 35 minutes left of the session, JiR Moto2's Johann Zarco had his second crash of the day, with Italtrans Racing Team's Claudio Corti and Kiefer Racing's Max Neukirchner also crashing out in the latter stages of qualifying. None of the riders were seriously hurt in the incidents.

Video: Ford shows off Mustang Shelby GT500's new launch control

2013 Shelby GT500 burnout

Listen to the sage words of the late Carroll Shelby: "650 horsepower? Nobody else has it." We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.

Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast Chevy Corvette ZR1 - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production Mustang in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve.

And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip.

Or, ya know, you could turn the system off and smoke bomb your neighborhood. See examples of both launch techniques in the video below, because whenever a video starts off with a prominent disclaimer, you know it's going to be good.

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Valencia, 2012In the round-up: Sebastian Vettel and Romain Grosjean’s alternator failures during the Euoprean Grand Prix were caused by overheating.

Top F1 links from the past 24 hours:

Renault: European GP Alternator Failures (ScarbsF1)

“In an F1 car the alternators function is constantly monitored, the power output and the unit’s temperature are visible via telemetry by the team in the pits. In the case of the Valencia failures, the teams already knew before the Safety Car the units were overheating and would fail.”

Glock: I’ll be fighting fit for Silverstone (F1)

“I still feel a little weak in the legs, but otherwise I am okay. It was obviously very disappointing that I was forced to miss the race in Valencia, but that is the way it goes sometimes. You cannot just ignore the symptoms I was experiencing.”

Boullier urges caution as F1 costs deadline looms (Autosport)

“We made some decisions already in the past which cost us money now; and may cost us more money in the future. So we need to make sure that we go the right way and don’t rush.”

Attention on Ecclestone after German banker jailed (The Guardian)

“Prosecutor Christoph Rodler yesterday rejected Ecclestone’s defence. ‘Ecclestone was not a victim of blackmail, but a fellow participant in bribery,’ he told the court in his closing statements.”

London GP a distant dream despite hype (Reuters)

“The idea, at this stage no more than a bit of fun to create some headlines and buzz ahead of the country’s annual race in the rural heart of England, won the support of Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone.”

Boris Johnson ‘broadly positive’ over London Grand Prix plan

“Mr Johnson said he was ‘broadly positive’ about the plan as long as air quality and noise issues were addressed.”

Sir Stirling Moss hopes London Grand Prix will finally be possible (The Guardian)

“I think it would be tremendous for London and for our sport and it would bring an enormous amount of money in. When you get a whole lot coming in where expense doesn’t really matter, it’s an enormous filler.”

Comment of the day

Should we have grid guys as well as grid girls? Or is the whole thing a bit dodgy? Chris Goldsmith offers a view:

The only thing with using ‘grid boys’ for female drivers, is that it makes an implicit sexual connection between the driver and the person holding their grid number.

While I do agree it’s fairly archaic to have grid girls, isn’t the problem more that there are people being employed solely for the sexual gratification of people around them, rather than some kind of gender inequality?

If you replace women with men for female drivers, what you’re doing, in effect, is confirming that they are there specifically because the driver is supposed to be physically attracted with them.

Of course, we know that the purpose really is to add a little bit of eye candy for the (historically predominantly male) viewers. That people are being employed as eye candy at all is something which should be addressed, and gender equality in this case only reinforces the negative connotations of why these people are there in the first place.

On this day in F1

Michael Schumacher scored a comfortable victory in the French Grand Prix 15 years ago today, winning from pole position and setting fastest lap. Fellow German Heinz-Harald Frentzen was second.

Their team mates were third and fourth, Eddie Irvine holding Jacques Villeneuve back, the Williams driver spinning at the final corner in his attempts to pass the Ferrari.

Famously, the elder Schumacher even had the presence of mind to allow brother Ralf Schumacher to unlap himself in the closing stages. The Jordan driver went on to take sixth place from David Coulthard on the final lap.

Here’s the start of the race:

Cortese storms to Assen pole

Red Bull KTM Ajo's Sandro Cortese will start tomorrow's Iveco TT Assen Moto3™ race from pole position after setting the quickest time this afternoon in front of teammate Danny Kent and Niccolò Antonelli. With a time of 1.43'645, Cortese threw down the gauntlet for the forthcoming race, relegating Kent into second place, who recorded the first ever front row start in his Grand Prix career. San Carlo Gresini Moto3's Antonelli was another rider to get his first ever front row start in his rookie year, after having shown great pace all weekend. Fourth spot went to Bankia Aspar's Héctor Faubel, who started the session slowly, yet came into his stride towards the end. Lining up next to him in fifth is TT Motion Events Racing's Niklas Ajo, who has looked resurgent ever since arriving at the Dutch circuit. Sixth place is occupied by Blusens Avintia's championship leader Maverick Viñales, who was unable to add to his string of pole-positions this season. Caretta Technology's Alexis Masbou starts tomorrow's race from seventh, after putting in yet another solid performance in the afternoon session. Alongside him in eighth is Estrella Galicia 0,0's Miguel Oliveira, in front of Redox-Ongetta-Centro Seta's Jakub Kornfeil in ninth, who was running close to the top in the early stages. RW Racing GP's Luis Salom completes the top ten, and will be hoping to resolve some set-up issues, which hindered his qualifying slightly. IodaRacing Project's Jonas Folger was unable to go head out in this afternoon's qualifying session as his team was unable to fix a mechanical issue that kept him out of the morning's practice as well. JHK T-Shirt Laglisse's Efrén Vázquez suffered a heavy crash 15 minutes before the end, yet managed to regroup and head out for the final few minutes, ending up in 24th.

Knight Wins Day One at the EWC GP of Italy

David KNIGHT returns to his winning ways as he secures a much-welcomed victory in Enduro 3. Juha SALMINEN places his Husqvarna back on top to win Enduro 2 while KTM's Antoine MEO puts in a last lap dash to steal victory in Enduro 1 at the Maxxis FIM Enduro World Championship Scorpion GP of Italy. After a six-week break since round four of the series in Portugal, the EWC returned to action with a bang at Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. With temperatures reaching as high as 35 plus degrees, day one of the fifth round of the championship was a real test of attrition for all the competitors involved. Along with David KNIGHT (GB - KTM) winning Enduro 3, fellow British competitor Jane DANIELS (Husaberg) also reached the podium of the Women's Cup in her debut EWC ride. In what was her first ever enduro competition; the 18-year old grabbed a sensational third overall in the Women's Cup.However, there was also upset for numerous riders as the heat began to take its toll on both man and machine. France's Johnny AUBERT (KTM) was first to fall foul when a technical issue ruled him out on contention in Enduro 2. Britain's Jordan ROSE (TM) and Spain's Mario ROMAN (KTM) were also forced to retire due to injury.Finland's Juha SALMINEN (Husqvarna) returned to form in the Italian sunshine to claim victory in Enduro 2. Finding the dry, dusty and rocky terrain exactly to his liking, SALMINEN secured a well deserved win. "I felt comfortable all day and didn't have any problems. My speed was strong and I'm happy with how I rode," saidSALMINEN after the podium celebrations. "Although Cristobal was fast on the Enduro Test I was able to gap him on the other two tests to control my advantage. It's nice to win again and I hope to repeat this result tomorrow."As the only rider to challenge the hard charging Finn, Spain's Cristobal GUERRERO (KTM) ended his day as runner up. Setting some of the fastest times of the day o n the Enduro Test, GUERRERO finished less than 18 seconds behind the Husqvarna rider to card his sixth podium of the season. Behind the top two, championship leader Pierre-Alexandre RENET (Husaberg) fended off a late charge from Spain's Ivan CERVANTES (Gas Gas) to grab third. With CERVANTES ending his day in fourth, France's Antoine BASSET (Yamaha) delivered his best result of the year to place fifth. In Enduro 3 Britain's David KNIGHT made a welcome return to the top step of the podium. Finding some fast and smooth lines in the crucial Extreme Test, the KTM rider was able to maintain his advantage throughout the day. Putting an end to Christophe NAMBOTIN's eight-race wining streak, he topped his class by almost 18 seconds."I didn't expect to win but it feels good to finally do so," smiled a very pleasedKNIGHT. "I just tried to keep consistent today and managed to remain relatively mistake free. I'm so happy to finally be back on the top step of the podium."After what has been an incredible run of form so far this season, NAMBOTIN (F – KTM) was unable to match the pace set by KNIGHT an d had to be content with second. Hampered by a couple of small crashes, the Frenchman ended his day in second place. Sweden's Joakim LJUNGGREN (Husaberg) rode a lonely race to finish third. Finishing 30 seconds behind the leading duo, the Husaberg rider also placed almost 30 seconds in front of his teammate Oriol MENA (S). Enjoying the tough conditions, MENA beat Estonia's Aigar LEOK (TM) to place fourth with LEOK finishing 25 seconds further back in fifth.Admitting to struggle with nerves during the early morning tests, MEO almost failed to finish when he crashed hard on lap two and twisted his knee. Strapping the injury, the Frenchman dug deep to overhaul the hard charging Husqvarna mounted Matti SEISTOLA (FI) to secure victory."My grandparent live quite close Castiglion Fiorentino so it felt like a home race for me. I put a lot of pressure on myself to win here and it caused me to make many errors," confirmed MEO. "I crashed hard on the Enduro Test and hurt my knee. After strapping it up, I pushed incredibly hard and managed to win."Showing that he has put his difficult start to the season behind him, Finland's Matti SEISTOLA lead the way throughout most of day one in Italy. However, unable to hold back the late charge by MEO, the Finn was forced to settle for second. Challenging SEISTOLA throughout most of the day, Finland's Eero REMES (KTM) finished just three seconds behind his fellow countryman to place third.Behind the top three, the Italian duo of Simone ALBERGONI (Honda) and Thomas OLDRATI (KTM) engaged in a daylong battle for fourth. With little to separate each other, OLDRATI eventually got the better of ALBERGONI to secure fourth and pushed the Honda rider back to fifth. In Enduro Junior France's Mathias BELLINO (Husaberg) recorded his seventh win of the year. Building a lead during the opening lap, the Husaberg rider was forced to fight his way back into contention after a costly crash in the Extreme Test on lap three. Battling hard with Italy's Jonathan MANZI (KTM) during the final lap he narrowly beat his rival by 11 seconds to claim victory. Sensing a home win, MANZI pushed hard for victory on the final lap but couldn't beat BELLINO and finished as runner up to the Frenchman. Finding hot conditions similar to home, Argentina's Kevin BENAVIDES (KTM) completed the top three. Britain's Danny MCCANNEY (Gas Gas) was fourth, while Italy's Edoardo D'AMBROSIO (KTM) rounded out the top five.Italy's Giacomo REDONDI (KTM) delivered a winning result to win the E nduro Youth class. Guido CONFORTI (I - Yamaha) was second with Matteo BRESOLIN (I - Husaberg) rounding out the top three.Spain's Laia SANZ (Gas Gas) was the clear leader in the Women's Cup. Making light work of the technically demanding Extreme Test, she went on to claim victory by over five minutes. Unable to match the pace set by her teammate, France's Ludivine PUY (Gas Gas) finished a distant second. Keeping touch with PUY during the early part of the day, DANIELS held on to finish an impressive third overall. Sweden'sJessica JONSSON (Gas Gas) and Australia's Jessica GARDINER (Yamaha) completed the top five.

Report: Dan Neil eats crow, donates $1,000 to charity on behalf of Tesla CEO Elon Musk

2012 Tesla Model S

Dan Neil, he of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism fame, has made a decent living peddling his automotive snark, and for good reason, as Neil is unquestionably one of the best and funniest at what we do. Tesla CEO Elon Musk - also an outspoken salesman of some merit - differs from Neil in one primary respect, which is that Musk is worth some $2 billion and thus doesn't have to drive someone else's cars around.

When these two agreed to resolve their disagreement over Tesla's seemingly pie-in-the-sky production plans by means of a wager, those of us familiar with both affable egos were deeply amused. Neil most certainly did not expect to lose his end of the bet: That Tesla would fail in its promise to deliver its second model on time. What with the prevailing view at the time being that Tesla's game plan was merely to get bought out by some larger entity and that the Model S was just vaporware, a means to that end, we probably would have gone with Neil had someone forced us to take sides. Of course, we can all learn a lesson here, which is that you don't bet against the guy who owns the casino.

Musk and Tesla clearly kept up their end of the bargain, so Neil's public mea culpa ran in Friday's Wall Street Journal. He states that he's made his $1,000 contribution to Doctors Without Borders, the penalty for the loss being far less than Musk's promised $1 million debit. Neil's pride is likely hurting more from the comeuppance than the cash outlay dented his savings account, but as he writes, "I lost, and happily so. As a proponent of electric mobility, I have said many times that I wanted to lose the bet... As a critic, I'll reserve judgment on the Model S until I get a chance to drive it."

Dutch delight for Smith and Simeon in Assen

Bradley Smith Assen 2012

Tech 3 Racing Team rider Bradley Smith stormed to his best result of the 2012 Moto2 World Championship in today's historic Dutch TT at Assen.

The British rider took full advantage of a third row grid position to make a typically aggressive start that immediately put him in contention for a podium in a frenetic opening few laps.

Smith's overtaking skills immediately came to the fore on the legendary Assen track and after three laps he had broken into the top five and was right behind eventua l race winner Marc Marquez.

As the frantic action unfolded in front of a crowd of just over 90,000 fans, Smith dropped back to ninth at the halfway stage but then showed why he is one of the strongest in the Moto2 field on worn tyres.

The 21-year-old launched a brilliant attack in the second half of the race and by lap 16 he moved back into the top six and then superbly fought his way back into podium contention behind Alex de Angelis, Esteve Rabat and Scott Redding.

Smith never gave up and pushing his Mistral 610 machine to the limit he finished just 1.5s behind Redding in third position at the end of a pulsating 24-lap encounter.

Team-mate Xavier Simeon enjoyed an equally impressive race to equal his best result of the season after a fantas tic charge through the pack from 24th place on the grid.

The Belgian rider was confident he could battle for a top 15 and he didn't disappoint with a performance full of skill and aggression. A sensational start moved him into 13th position on the second lap and he just missed out on a season best 12th place after an epic battle with Japanese rider Takaaki Nakagami that came right down to the last lap.

Bradley Smith 6th – 47 points

“That was a fantastic race and I feel really happy with the job all of us at Tech 3 Racing have done because it was easily the best race of the season. It is brilliant to be back in the top six because this is where we should be consistently. We have not stopped working to improve the Mistral 610 machine and to finish so close to the podium is a great confi dence boost. I was worried the good result in Silverstone might have been down to a bit of home race factor, but we have been even stronger and more competitive here in Assen. It was a really hard race and I never gave up because I could see Scott in third and just kept trying to put pressure on Alex and Esteve. I was back to being one of the fastest on track today and I was very fast in the second half of the race on worn tyres. That was a key strength of mine last season and I could show it again today. Now we go to the Sachsenring next weekend with a lot of confidence.”

Xavier Simeon 13th – 9 points
“I am really happy to have achieved the objective of getting in the points because I was disappointed in qualifying to be so far back on the grid. I knew I had a much better pace than 24th and immediately in the race I had a good feel ing with the Mistral 610 machine. Two riders crashed in front of me on the first lap and that helped put me in the points and after that it was a very tough race. I just pushed at 100% on every lap and I am really pleased to equal my best result of the season. It's a pity that Nakagami pushed me off track in the last lap because I'd have been really happy to be 12th and get my best result of 2012 like Bradley managed. The Tech 3 Racing Team did a fantastic job and I am confident as my fitness gets back to 100% that I will be battling for the top 10 in the next races.”

Herve Poncharal – Team Manager
“We have a lot of smiling faces in the Tech 3 Racing garage this afternoon because it is great to see Bradley and Xavier both in the top 15 with incredibly strong performances. We have not had an easy start to the season but today's resul t shows how competitive the Mistral 610 package is and this is a good reward for all the work Bradley, Xavier and the Tech 3 Racing Team has put in to improve. Bradley has been fast all weekend and he got one of his trademark fast and aggressive starts and he was able to stay with the leading group for a long time before he dropped back a little bit. But in the last laps he again showed he is really strong on worn tyres and he gave himself a great chance to be in the top four. But to finish sixth and get his best result of the season gives the Tech 3 Racing Team a lot of confidence for the next races where Bradley is very strong. Xavier also did an amazing job and I am really pleased for him because he has worked very hard to recover from the injuries he got in Le Mans. And had he not had a problem with traffic in qualifying to be so far down the grid I have no doubt he would have finished in the top 10. His lap times were really competitive considering he is still riding in a lot of pain and he can proud of the job he did today.”

Abraham to miss Assen and Sachsenring

Karel Abraham Assen 2012

Following consultation with medical staff, Karel Abraham will not take part in Saturday’s MotoGP race at Assen in the Netherlands. Before the morning warm-up, the Czech rider underwent a new check-up, which showed that his hand is healing very slowly and that any further strain could make matters worse.

Karel Abraham
“We tried riding flat out in the warm-up this morning, just to see if the hand would hold up for the entire race. Unfortunately, the pain was quite intense and it would be nearly impossible to ride at full pelt for three-quarters of an hour. Before that, I’d gone for another check-up with the doctors, where they explained that the cause of the pain was the mass bruising of the hand, which would only get worse with any repeated strain. It’s tough, but the only way the hand’s going to get better is with complete rest and rehabilitation. With this in mind, we’ve decided in all likelihood to skip the next race at the Sachsenring in Germany, since the hand is not going to heal in five days and any further strain would put us back to square one. So, I’ll have at least two weeks of rehab, which I hope will be enough time to be fully ready for the next race at Italy’s Mugello circuit. To miss out on Germany is really difficult to take: for Czech fans, it’s the closest race apart from Brno, and I know that there are many fans looking forward to the trip. I’d just like to let them know that I’m really sorry.”

Viñales takes victory in Assen thriller

In one of the most hotly contested Moto3™ races this season at the Iveco TT Assen it was Blusens Avintia's Maverick Viñales who stormed to victory in sunny conditions ahead of Sandro Cortese and Danny Kent.It was Red Bull KTM Ajo's Kent and Bankia Aspar's Hector Faubel that got the best start, with Kent's teammate Cortese dropping back to fourth from pole. The first three laps were a frantic affair, with Cortese, Viñales and San Carlo Gresini Moto3's Niccolò Antonelli all fighting their way to the front. They were however soon put under pressure by TT Motion Events Racing's Niklas Ajo, Racing Team Germany's Louis Rossi and RW Racing GP's Luis Salom.Caretta Technology's Jack Miller was handed a ride-through for a jump start, while IodaRacing Project's Jonas Folger's bad weekend got even worse as he crashed out with 18 laps remaining. With 15 laps to go, Kent, who had slowed briefly, pushed his way up the field again and passed his teammate Cortese for the lead. This was short lived however as Viñales took advantage of the two fighting and nipped into the lead. With 12 laps to go a leading group of six riders started to pull out a small gap at the front with Viñales and Cortese leading the pack, pursued by Kent, Salom, Rossi and Estrella Galicia 0,0's Alex Rins. A lap later Miller was shown the black flag for ignoring the ride-through penalty, putting an end to his race. A few laps after, Ambrogio Next Racing's Giulian Pedone retired from the race with mechanical issues. It was misery for Antonelli with nine laps left, as he crashed out of what had looked like a promising race for the youngster, as did Mahindra Racing's Danny Webb.As the scrap at the front got harder towards the end, Cortese and Kent were going fairing to fairing in their pursuit of the leading Viñales, with Cortese almost taking out his teammate at one point. The group would not settle down however, with many aggressive passed being made in the final laps, in a nail-biting finale. The last lap was one of best ever seen in the Moto3 class as positions changed frantically in the final corners, with Viñales getting the final slingshot over the line, with a photo analysis required to decide the positions between Salom, Kent and Cortese. With Viñales taking the win, second place went to Cortese, with Kent taking the final step on the rostrum; his first ever podium of his Grand Prix career. They were followed by Salom, Rossi, Rins, Caretta Technology's Alexis Masbou, Ajo, JHK T-Shirt Laglisse's Efrén Vázquez and Rins' teammate Miguel Oliveira.

Bradley Smith sets sights on top six in Assen

Bradley Smith Assen 2012

Tech 3 Racing Team rider Bradley Smith is confident he will be battling for his first top six finish of the 2012 Moto2 World Championship in Assen tomorrow after an encouraging qualifying performance this afternoon.

The British rider will start from inside the top 10 for the second race in a row after a best lap of 1.38.414 secured him eighth position in another closely contested Moto2 qualifying session.

Smith's growing confidence with the 2012 Mistral 610 machine was on display and his quickest pace was just over 0.1s away from the fourth best time and he is optimistic he can challenge for the top six in tomorrow's 24-lap race.

Smith has once again worked closely with his Tech 3 Racing crew to improve the performance of his Mistral 610 machine and after leading his home race and finishing seventh at Silverstone 12 days ago, the 21-year-old is looking to finish higher up the leaderboard tomorrow.

It was a difficult qualifying session for team-mate Xavier Simeon. The Belgian rider is still working his way back to full strength with left hand and foot injuries picked up in Le Mans not yet 100% recovered.

Simeon though was unfortunate to encounter slower riders each time he tried to push on fresh Dunlop rubber and he will start from 24th place on the grid. He clocked a best time of 1.39.302 but is confident without heavy traffic slowing his progress at the end of qualifying that he could have been further up the grid and his target i s to fight his way through for a top 15 finish.

Bradley Smith 8th 1.38.414 – 23 laps
“It has been a very positive weekend so far and we have improved the bike in every session and gone faster and faster. My feeling with the bike is getting better and better and we have definitely taken another step this weekend, so I am really happy about that. There is a bit of a gap to the top three but between fourth and tenth it is pretty close and it is going to be really important to get a good start. The first part of the track is pretty tight so I need to be aggressive like I was in Silverstone to pick up some places early on. It looks like it could be an exciting fight tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. It would be nice to be back inside the top six, which would be a step in the right direction and a reward for all the hard work my Tech 3 R acing has been putting in.”

Xavier Simeon 24th 1.39.302 – 24 laps
“The session was going quite well and I felt in a good rhythm and happy with my pace but at the end when I put in new tyres to push for a good grid position I came across a lot of traffic. There are a lot of bikes on track but in Moto2 some riders can be a little bit stupid because they ride slowly on the racing line and they don't care about who is approaching from behind. After I put the new tyres on I had one clear lap in my last eight and I am really disappointed I could not be higher up the grid because the bike was a lot better today. I don't think it was unrealistic to think I could have been in the top 10, but I kept getting blocked and now I am not even in the top 20. My pace is good enough to get into the points tomorrow and that will be the target because t oday we deserved a better result after the Tech 3 Racing Team gave me a good bike.”

Early Finish for Bradl at Assen GP

Stefan Bradl Assen 2012

In sunny conditions the seventh round of the season at Assen circuit saw Stoner conquering the victory followed by his team mate Pedrosa and Dovizioso (third) whilst the premier class rookie Stefan Bradl crashed out on lap two making this the first race he has not finished in his rookie season.

The adjustments made after the first outing on day one, gave Bradl the confidence to improve his pace taking fourth in yesterday qualifying session in only his seventh ever start. Unfortunately the German could not translate his impressive pace into a good result today but he is looking forward to bounce back at his home track in the next weekend.

Bradl: “Well... I do not have so much to say. Yesterday we obtained a very good grid position and today I took another good start. In the first laps the feeling with the bike was great and I could easily close the little gap to Spies. I do not remember last time I has such a good feeling in the first laps but I have to be honest... Probably I was too much aggressive in braking into turn 10 and I crashed. It’s my mistake and I am very sorry for the guys: today we could get a very positive result. Now I want to learn from my mistakes making another step forward ahead my home race. The potential is there and we are capable to race with the top riders”.

If you work on motorcycles that are not absolutely brand-new, you will run across a bolt or nut that is too damaged to be removed with an ordinary wrench or socket.

If you work on motorcycles that are not absolutely brand-new, you will run across a bolt or nut that is too damaged to be removed with an ordinary wrench or socket. Recently, bolt-removal tools have been introduced through most of the quality tool outlets. These look something like an ordinary socket, but are made of hardened tool steel and have internal helical flutes. As you turn the tool counterclockwise with a wrench or socket, the flutes bite into the damaged bolt head or nut. To a point, the more you turn the tool, the harder it bites. These specialized tools easily remove bolts and nuts that are too far gone to remove with regular tools. They are compact and reasonably priced, and don’t require other specialized tools to work. The downside is sizing: We had to buy two sets to get a range that fits common motorcycle fasteners from 8-19mm. Finding one for a large nut like on an axle may be problematic.

Behind the Design: Ackerman Tee

Chris-Ackerman-Tee

Help support long time friend of Metal Mulisha, Chris Akerman, who was injured in a riding accident. All proceeds from this tee will go to support Chris!

Learn Chris’ Story: Nine years ago, just before Chris’ 22nd birthday, he was injured in Dumont Dunes, California aboard his Honda CRF 450. They were there on a road trip for MX Machine Magazine and filming for the new Crusty Demons of Dirt video. While there, he happened to be riding at a high rate of speed at the front of a pack of the world’s best Freestyle Motocross Riders and Friends across the base of the Sand Dunes. At the time the light was very flat and he unknowingly went off the back of a blind dune. To put it mildly, it caused him severe injury (Broken Wrist, Dislocated Shoulders, Collapsed Lungs, Shattered Pelvis, Broken Ribs and a C-2 Spinal Cord Injury). Luckily, one of his friends had a Forestry survival Kit and and some others knew CPR and that kept him alive for over an hour and a half until the paramedics arrived. He was then airlifted by an army Black Hawk helicopter from Fort Irwin to Loma Linda University Hospital where he was then in a coma for 3 1/2 weeks. Chris is now permanently on a ventilator at home with a great group of nurses.

Five (More) Ways to Cheat Death on a Motorcycle

Five More Ways to Cheat Death on a Motorcycle

I recently posted a list of Five Ways to Cheat Death on a Motorcycle... but because you can never offer too many tips for avoiding a nasty accident, I dug up even more ways to stay safe on a bike.

This time around, the pointers come from the folks at Allstate Insurance, who tell us that June kicks off the deadliest stretch of months for motorcyclists. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, 2010 saw 534 rider fatalities in June, the third most fatal month of that year; July came in second with 563 rider casualties, and August was the deadliest month with 576 fatalities.

To see Allstate's suggestions on safer riding, check out Five (More) Ways to Cheat Death on a Motorcycle, and for the original list of five safety measures, click here.

Overheating caused Vettel and Grosjean retirements | F1 Fanatic round-up

Chris Goldsmith
